Fab Freebie: OXO LockTop Containers

**GIVEAWAY CLOSED**

Classic Tomato Salad

If there’s one thing I love, it’s food containers. You know I’m all about food prep and making my weekday life easier and food containers are a lifesaver. Here are some things I’ve learned about food containers, since you know, I’m a professional and all:

  • Takeout containers are NOT meant for food storage. The tops end up cracking and they always end up leaking when in transport (note: your bag smelling like balsamic vinegar is not attractive at work).
  • Takeout containers are basically disposable. Enough said.
  • Apparently we eat way too much takeout and hoard their containers
  • They never are 100% leak proof.
So now that you know that I might prepare a lot of foods, I also have my fair share of takeout orders. I think for lent next year I should give up takeout, specifically Didi’s that delivers the most amazing Chinese AND Mexican food in my area. Yeah, it’s like two of the best fast foods collided and had a baby. Apparently my ass is carrying said baby because this is most definitely my reason for not losing any weight.
Recently I was sent some of OXO’s LockTop Containers to try and I’ve been using it as an excuse to not order out as much. So far so good! I’ve packed a salad beast for lunch, traveling with the most terrifying ingredient (balsamic vinegar!) and arrived without a spill! Since I love you so much I even did an extra shake of the container when I got to work to see if the containers are in fact leak free. Guess what? It passed the test! So far these are the best containers I’ve tried and I love them!

Here’s an idea: while I LOVE the recipe posts, it might be cool to do like…. a theme post with a few recipes. Like, instead of the layered dip, how about 2-3 appetizers for a Mexican fiesta, or the dip and a festive decoration?  Just an idea… But I love it as is, too.

  2. says

That sounds like a great idea Jordan! I think I’ll need a few more “authentic” recipes to create a few themes. Hopefully in June I’ll have a theme post coming, I was actually thinking about it recently. Thanks for your input! :)

First:  I’m mad that I now have to go and toss my fairly substantial collection of takeout food containers (even though they are ones that I’ve gotten from my mother-in-law who is clearly more of a container hoarder than I am)
Second:  I would LOVE to see more dessert recipes because you KNOW I have an unrelenting sweet tooth and while I’m doing pretty well avoiding them, I still gaze at them longingly on an almost daily basis, and the absence of them in my stomach is leaving a gaping hole in my heart *tear*
Finally:  We’ve already had the food preparation conversation so you know my answer to your questions is NEGATIVE.  I do NOT prepare my food and am truly daunted by the idea of it (especially given the fact that thanks to this post, I will no longer have any containers to store them in anyway after today….ggggggrrrrr).  Although, if I EVER get my assessment questionnaire, I’m sure it will be chock full of food storage suggestions *sigh*
Yes I will be posting on FB because I’ve been meaning to share your blog w/my fellow fitness lifestyle incorporation attempters, not I have even more of an incentive hahahahaha

what i like to see more of…. some more gluten free recipe
ideas … i was recently diagnosed with celiac :( …so now I’m on a mission to alter
all my favorite recipes so they are gluten free and safe for me to eat.
    :)

for the bonus question …. yes i try to pre-prepare as
much as i can for the week (lunches and dinners) so we rely on the
take-out foods as little as possible.  what i often do it cook a soup
and something in my crock-pot and portion it out in my food containers for
every day of the week. we alternate soup one day and slow cooked meal the
next so we don’t eat the same thing for lunches every day.  i also
like portion out my salads so during the week all i have to do is grab one
of the salad containers before i go to work (as for dressings i get oil
and vinegar from my cafeteria at work so i don’t have to carry it with me)

I prep throught the week and try to make stuff with good leftover potential – fav is skyline chili

  6. says

Don’t go throwing them out! lol, I’m sure they still hold a purpose. I use mine for roasted potatoes storage or just things that won’t spill.

Oh man desserts are my weakness! I’m terrible at baking! Let me see if I can think a few up ;)

And I think you are secretly a foodie waiting to be discovered! Don’t go crazy and try to premake 7 days worth of meals, take baby steps. Maybe just make quinoa so you can add those to your daily salad (I know you buy it on a regular basis at work missy).

Joanna you sound like you’re way ahead of the game!! Soups are a great make-ahead dish but my husband would not like me much if I made it in the summers (he doesn’t like soup much to begin with lol).

I just posted a gluten free recipe with you in mind! It’s my FAVORITE summer dish!! http://www.forkyou-noforkyou.com/2012/06/classic-tomato-salad.html

*keep in mind I am not gluten free nor do I have celiac so make sure you check your ingredients you have at home

I’m new to your blog…but I’d love to see more photos!  Your photos are gorgeous!

  9. Nicolle says

Hey, I’m new to your blog as well, but recipes and food photos are always great. I like that you’ve combined some fitness with your content as well. And I love your blog name. Very catchy!

Bonus question: I try to prepare my foods for the week, since I work late, especially meats because I really get annoyed by cleaning the fat off. But, containers such as the ones you feature would definitely encourage me to start prepping more.

  10. says

Thanks Nicolle! Welcome to my little space on the ole internet :)

When I used to eat meat we always prepared them in advance. I was the same way, cleaning out meats was one of the things I hated about eating meats! It’s gross but must be done.

Here’s something I used to do in my meateating days, clean and season meats, place them in single serving sandwich bags and freeze what you don’t plan on making right away. Also, poaching meats and putting them in serving sizes is great, since it’s poached you can add salsa for a fat free seasoning, bbq sauce or add to salads.

Hi Chris, So in response to your giveaway, What I’d like to see are some wedding pics on your wedding section, desserts (Sweet Tooth is kicking in at this moment), I typically don’t prepare food in advance, but I do marinade in advance; I love tasting flavors in whatever I prepare ie this little Oxo lockbox should do the trick :).  I happen to love Oxo products, they just have a better feel in my hands!.  Keep up the great blog <3

  12. says

Ok so there’s most definitely a trend for desserts! I’m SO not a baker, especially in the summer but I think I have to make it a point to put some things together for you guys :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  13. says
